Education is one of Marafiki Community International’s main values - we are extremely passionate about the work we do with schools in and around Nairobi.

Most schools in Kenya receive little to no government funding and find themselves lacking in the resources needed to effectively teach. Students at these schools often come from harsh socio-economic backgrounds and many are orphans. That’s why we need volunteers like you to help our schools, support our teachers and enable these children to reach their full potential.

You will be teaching across a range of subjects, including math, english, science, geography and social sciences. While you don’t need teaching experience to apply, you do need to be enthusiastic and possess a positive, can-do attitude. You may be required to teach lessons with little equipment and resources, so you need to be prepared to use your initiative and think on your feet.

Teachers or those with previous teaching experience can also help provide valuable training for local teachers which will have a lasting impact long after you have completed your placement.

The schools we work with are also starting to develop their own sustainable projects that volunteers can get involved with, ranging from agricultural projects to jewellery making. It is also possible for volunteers to help out with the local community sports program which runs after school from 4pm - 7pm.

Please keep in mind that Kenyan school holidays are in April and August and from mid-November until early-January. During these periods, volunteers can participate in our holiday programs.

As with all our volunteer programs in Kenya, you will dedicate 1 day a week to one of our outreach programs. This means you will get to see some of our other projects such as the Women’s Rescue Centre, orphanages and HIV/AIDs program. This is the best way for us to make sure that our work is sustainable in the long-term.
