HIV/AIDS Program

Despite major progress, HIV/AIDS remains one of Kenya’s biggest health challenges.

Each year, an average of 89,00 adults and around 11,000 children across the country are infected with HIV. On top of this, more than half of Kenyans living with HIV do not know their HIV status.

This puts health workers in Kenya under great pressure and volunteers on this program will take part in their efforts to mount an effective response in meeting the needs of target communities.

You will be able to:

- Work on outreach programs which visit the slums around Nairobi with the purpose of providing basic medical care and delivering vital supplies of medicine and food

- Participate in schemes put in place to educate local communities, schools and individuals about HIV/AIDS and promote access to medical care

- Provide emotional support to those suffering with HIV/AIDS through counselling and therapy sessions

- Test people for HIV - which will help reduce the spread of the disease and ensure sufferers can gain access to the medical care and emotional support they need

You can opt to start this placement by undertaking a 2-week HIV/AIDS Training Course which is designed to equip you with the vital skills you will need on this program, including taking blood samples, testing blood, dealing with patients and counselling. Although this is not compulsory - you can still take part in outreach activities without it - it is highly recommended, especially if you wish to have a more hands-on role in the program.

As with all our volunteer programs in Kenya, you will dedicate 1 day a week to one of our outreach programs. This means you will get to see some of our other projects such as the Women’s Rescue Centre, orphanages and medical program. This is the best way for us to make sure that our work is sustainable in the long-term.
